New Life for A Broken Rocking Chair

I was featured!
When I found this rocking chair last year at my in-laws flea market, it was in such bad shape that they were just going to throw it out. Thinking someone might want it, they priced it at $2. Needless to say, or great for me, it didn't sell.

House Plants turned Garden Plants

When I lived up north, I loved to have house plants. One of the plants that I had was the peace lily. When I moved to Florida, I brought a few of my plants with me and the peace lily was one of them. I realized that instead of having this plant in the house, people here planted them in their gardens.

Tea and Cherry "Light" Scones

Nothing like enjoying a cup of tea or coffee and a warm cherry scone. Yum!

I love scones, but I hate all of the calories. So I decided to find a way to make them with a lot less calories than my original version. This version can be adapted to add what ever fruit you like best.

Got Seed?

Birds like to eat so why not make their feeders fun and whimsical. I am always looking for new ways to create bird feeders for my garden. I have been working on my side garden lately since it is right out side my window where I have my computer. You already saw my fountain in My Little Squirrel post, today I will show you my new bird feeders.

This one is just a little whimsical. Wonder if the birds think so?

What to do with those single silver salt shakers?

Have you ever come across beautiful silver salt and pepper shakers but there was only one of them. Sometimes you even find a pair. I love to collect silver salt and pepper shakers although I don't really use them that way. I love to display them and use them as vases.

Window People?

We have all seen how great old windows are - many linky parties feature projects and decorating ideas what use old windows  - table tops, home decor, garden ideas and the list goes on and on. But did you ever think about using old windows to create a person? Well, that's exactly what this couple did up the road from me.

Orange Ricotta Yummies

Sometimes you just have to adapt your recipe. I have made these cookies from Giada De Laurentiis several times and love them. The recipe calls for lemons but when I went to make it I only had oranges. So why not!

Eclectic Red Barn: Orange Ricotta Cookies

They are a very moist cookie and they freeze well. That is if you have any left to freeze!

Ramped Up Sconces

Eclectic Red Barn: Wrought Iron Sconces Revved Up
Did you ever go to a garage sale and bought something because you felt bad about not buying something. Crazy right! Well, I went to this yard and this older gentleman had a lot of stuff - sort of- but no buyers. I was going to leave but he smiled and I thought there must be something I could purchase.

Tabebuia or Trumpet Tree

What a lovely tree this is. Its full name is Tabebuia caraiba and grows from central Florida southward. In the spring it produces clusters of yellow trumpet flowers.

My Bouillon Fringe Foot Stool

PJH Desisgns
It is my husband's annual golf outing with his brother, cousin and dad. Each year they come to Florida to golf. This year they decided to come to our house in Eustis. They golf and I cook. Well, it is not that bad since I like to cook and I get to garage sale while they are out. I came across this little stool at a garage sale.  She was asking $5 but I got it for $2.50.

My Little Squirrel

My desk is a great place to work, because it is beside two large windows that looks out on my side garden. I am still working on getting this garden populated with plants and yard art. The other day this squirrel came over to the fountain for water. He climbed up and drank not only from the tray on the fountain.

Bolognaise Pizza Bread

I first saw this recipe when Rachael Ray made it several years ago.  She makes her tomato sauce by adding fresh tomatoes, but I cut some corners and it still turned out great.  With a side salad this makes a great meal.

Eclectic Red Barn: Bolognaise Pizza Bread with side salad

It is like deep dish pizza but has more filling.  My family loves this and requests it often.

Island Mango Bread

My Turn for us
If you have followed my blog, you know that I have several mango trees in my yard. Last year was a bumper crop. I had more mangoes than I knew what to do with. I made everything with mangoes.  Finally, we decided after giving many away to freeze the rest. We cut them into chucks and froze them - all 40 quart bags of them. Yes, I had mangoes!

Well, I try to use them as much as possible from the freezer, but it seems like they are multiplying in there. Guess what - my trees are loaded again. So I have been trying new and familiar recipes. I found this one and made changes. I sent it to work with my husband for all of his employees. I have to do something here !! They loved it so I am sharing it with you.

Have you tried Bar Keepers Friend?

Have you ever seen a piece of silver or brass and thought, I like it but it is in bad shape. Well, all of the pieces that you see below were those kind of pieces(one is missing from this picture) - some more than others. I got all of them for $2 so I said, what the heck!

I brought the pieces home and grabbed the Bar Keepers Friend.

From Crappy to Adorable

What a cute little stool this turned out to be. However, when I first saw this stool, I didn't give it much thought. My in-laws neighborhood was having a flea market at their club house. I picked up a couple of things and looked at this stool and said, "I don't know".

Eclectic Red Barn: Updated Stool with Yardsticks and some Easter Items
Near the end of the sale, everything was half price. I kept walking pass this stool and finally said, why not. It was 50 cents. I also got a rocker for $1.00, you will see that in a later post.

Queen Palm Tree Flower

Amazing what you see on your way to the post office. I didn't have my camera with me, so I had to use my phone. This Queen Palm Tree Flower was right in the post office parking lot.

This flowering tree caught my eye because I had not seen this particular flowering palm  before.

Lemons Blossom Tea Time

PJH Desisgns

Sometime you just want to sit and have some quite time. What better way to do that than to fix a cup of tea, (my favorite is Earl Grey), something sweet and sunshine. After I had made these lemon blossom cakes for my husband to take to work, I decided to sit and enjoy one of them. I wanted to make sure they were good, right?

Easter TableScape

When we think of Easter, we think of lovely bright colors or pastel colors like pink, blue, yellow, and lavender. Some of my decorating does include those colors. However, for my table scape, I decided to go in another direction - browns and whites.

I found these candle holders at a close out sale a couple of years ago, and to be honest, I forgot I had them.

All Things Bunny!

I have been working on my Easter decorating and found my bunny pillows. Well one of them does not have a bunny on it, but it is pink. Does that count? This year I decided to put the pillows on my bench.

Eclectic Red Barn: Display of bunny pillows for Easter
I am thinking of redoing that bench, but that is for another time.

Old window makes a great display!

  Life on Lakeshore Drive
My husband said, "this window is falling apart". He was kind of right. The one side was not so bad, but it was the other side that caught my eye. When I picked it up however, the paint and part of the window was coming off in my hands. For $1.00 I had to have it. I love old windows.

Eclectic Red Barn: Old window, bunny and wire basket
I didn't want to clean it up because I thought it might fall apart. Instead, I just use it as is.

Pansies or Violets?

Pansies love spring weather. It seems other than the typical Easter flowers, pansies are the first plants to become available in early spring. They thrive in the cooler temperatures and I love having them in my garden.

Purple pansy bloom
The pansy is a group of large-flowered hybrid plants cultivated as garden flowers. Pansies are derived from viola species Viola tricolor hybridized with other viola species. The common words "pansy" and "violet" are often used interchangeably.

Springtime and Tulips

Eclectically Vintage
I have been watching as many bloggers have been posting lovely Spring and Easter projects. I am definitely behind in my decorating until this past weekend when I found these beautiful tulips that were calling to me. I had to bring them home.

Tulips, ceramic bunny and bunny box
So I decided to start getting my Easter items out and begin decorating.

Yummy Key Lime Pie

I never thought I was a big key lime pie fan until I made my own. Now it is one of my favorites, especially in the warm climate that we have here in Florida. It is so light and refreshing.

Key Lime Pie with Whipped Cream @eclecticredbarn.blogspot.com

Having a key lime tree could be the other reason for loving this pie. These trees produce hundreds of small key limes, which is necessary since it takes around 20-22 key limes to make one pie.

Crocheted Purse as a Vase

Well as you can see from the image that I did not turn a crocheted purse into a real vase, but instead used it as a framed vase.

Vintage Frame with Crocheted Purse as a Vase

However, I did combine a vintage frame and a vintage crocheted purse into a vase so to speak. I found this frame at a yard sale just as is. They had painted it brown. I thought about repainting it but then decided to keep it for a while.

Signs, Signs, Unusual Signs

Last weekend, we spent it at our home north of Orlando, in a town called Eustis. Although our home is not in the country, there are many orange groves and horse farms in the surrounding area. As we were driving around on Saturday, I saw these two signs that caught my eye.

I have never seen a speed limit sign that had 5 miles per hour on it. Maybe you have in your area!

Red roses proclaim "I love you."

Red Roses Proclaim I Love You

They are the ultimate symbol of romantic love and enduring passion.

Red rose symbol of love

Florists say they can not keep enough roses in stock for Valentine's Day. In fact, it is estimated that about 2 billion dollars will be spent on flowers alone in 2013.

Valentine's Vignette

You know when they say "the gift that keeps on giving!" well, my junk pile finds are just that. A while back I told you about all the great finds that my neighbors through out. Another remake from my junk pile items. This time it is a white picture frame that I decided to use for Valentine's Day.
My husband says, "I can't let anything go to the land fill". Well, it really does bother me that so many items can be re-purposed and I am glad to do my part.

From Dumpster to Pretty Lady

Two weeks ago, I posted about items I acquired from trash pick up on my street, my baskets. (Still have more items to refinish). Well this week it is an item I found in a dumpster. I would have liked to found more, but I was yelled at to NOT pick anything from the dumpster. Oh, well at least I got this frame.

Pink Lady Frame
It didn't look like this when I rescued it however, but I really liked it and had to have it.

The Starburst( or Shooting Star) is Exploding

The Starburst or Shooting Star (botancial name: Clerodendrum quadriloculare) is a wonderful flower on a fast growing, large scale shrub or small tree. Not sure if I would call it a shrub since ours is more like 15 feet tall. We received it from a neighbor about 3 three years ago. It was only 3 feet tall. Last year was the first time it bloomed and it was gorgeous and this year it is even more beautiful.

Baskets from the Junk Pile

We have bulk pickup here once a month, where you can put out almost anything. Sometimes you can find some good things. Our neighbor is moving and after having a garage sale, put many items out for bulk pickup. I hate to have items going to landfills when they could be re-purposed.  I find it difficult to pass up good items. I found three planters, a picture frame, she gave me a hutch (needs a lot of work - will see it later), a bed frame(at another house), and a hugh clock face at another house. Great finds - what a week!

First to be finished were the three planters. I have pictures of the two wicker types, but I don't know what happened to the third original picture.

South Beach Dachshund Winterfest

11th Annual South Beach Dachshund Winterfest took place yesterday in South Beach Miami in support of Dachshund Rescue of South Florida. Our doxie, Marina (almost 11 years old)  is a rescue from this organization. She is the best!  We also took our daughter's doxie, Roddy (who is around 7 1/2 months) with us. As you can see, they were ready to go. Sitting in the car, waiting to leave.

A Cup of Chocolate Chip Cookies
Don't you just hate it when you try a new chocolate chip cookie recipe and they are too flat or too crisp and you want them to be chewy?  Well, I have a recipe that will give you those soft chewy cookies that you are looking for.

Most chocolate chip cookie recipes that I have seen use all butter.

Dollar Chair Make Over

Refinished chair with black leather seat
Sometimes you find a piece of furniture that's a great price but you don't really need it. Then sometimes you find a piece of furniture that's a great price and you do NEED it. That's what happened to me.

Our other house north of Orlando, came with a dining room set. Nothing fancy but since I did 't want to buy a new one, we would make it work for now. Only problem was that it only had four chairs.

I wanted to find two chairs that would work with the  set. They are rather simple, dark wood with black leather covered seats. Shouldn't be too hard to find something that works right?

Snowing in the North - Flowers Blooming in the South

As another winter snow storm hits the north, flowers are blooming here in the southern Florida. Lovely warm days with lots of sunshine comprise the right recipe for many flowers, including the Ground Orchid.
