Fall Update of Grey Rocking Chairs

Remember those great free rocking chairs I got from my neighbor? Well, we use them all the time and I wanted to give them a fall update. I had hoped to post this before Halloween, but that never happened. As you can see, I had a Halloween pillow on one of the rockers. It has since been removed.
Eclectic Red Barn: Grey rocking chairs decorated for Autumn
I created the Autumn banner by cutting up some fabric I had - brown and tan canvas.
Eclectic Red Barn: Fabric for banner
I cut some rectangles and then folded them to cut some points.
Eclectic Red Barn: Fabric cut into points
Then I used letters that I had purchased from Walmart that I used in my Fall plaque.
I placed the letter on the fabric and then used a magic marker to fill in the letter.
Eclectic Red Barn: Autumn banner on basket
I attached the letters to some twine with my hot glue gun. I had purchased the basket at Long and Scott Farms for $2 - lid included.
Eclectic Red Barn: Tea and fall accessories
We have tea out here in the evenings while the dogs play and we talk about our day.

These rocking chairs are just great and we are using them all the time. Not bad for something free.
What shall I do with them for Christmas?

Apricot-lime Shrimp

I love dishes that you can add anything to and it seems to work. This dish does that for me. It is easy to prepare and makes a delightful meal. Not too heavy and not too many calories. I found this recipe in Family Circle a few years back. I have made many modifications to it. Here is my latest version.

Did you get my text?

I think that was what my cat - Claire was saying. My husband and I were in the kitchen cooking yesterday, when Claire jumped up on the counter. My husband keeps his phone, iPad, keys and other goodies on the corner.

Get stubborn stains out of your linens!

Did you ever pass up a lovely linen because it had a stain on it? Or maybe your linens are in good shape except for one or two stains. If you need to get rid of a stain, then this remedy might be the answer. I say, "might" since some stains are just NOT meant to come out.

Here is a tablecloth I bought for 50 cents since it had a couple of stains.

Pumpkins, cucumbers and pickles?

So what does cucumbers and pickles have to do with pumpkins? Nothing really, but when you have a farm, it just might be related. At least that is the case with the Long and Scott Farm in Zellwood, Florida. We went there to get fresh corn and some pumpkins. Loved this sign that greets you.

Ringing in Fall

I know that officially fall started in September. However, since it was so warm here in Florida, it just didn't feel like fall to me. So I am ringing in fall in October.
Eclectic Red Barn: Ringing in Fall Plaque and School House Bells
My husband collects bells and the large school house bell in the middle was the one my mother rang when she was a child in a one room school house. As the American Pickers would say, it is the story behind the piece that makes it special. How we obtained it, is quite the story.

Sour Cream Coffee Cake

Need a moist and delicious coffee cake, then you should consider this sour cream coffee cake. I needed to send some good to my husband's office and I picked this. It was a hit, they loved it.

A Strange Place to Find a Sea Shell

I usually find my sea shells at the beach like everyone else, right?  However, do you have any idea where this one is? Stumped? Well, it certainly surprised me. It is hanging, but where?

It's National Cookie Day !

What a great day to celebrate - National Cookie Day! Who doesn't like cookies, they are awesome! Although I love most desserts, a good cookie will win me over every time. I don't make many cookies these days, but use to when the kids were little. One of their favorites was gingerbread cookies. This recipe is from my Grandmother and every time I look at her recipe, I just laugh. She lists the ingredients, in most cases, but no directions. Most of her recipes are this way. You really hope you can figure them out.
Not only do I have her recipe, but also the bowl she used to mix them in.

Fall reminds me of stews

Now that fall is officially here and the weather has turned cooler, well maybe not everywhere, still warm here in southern Florida, it is time for stew.

My husband craves Brunswick stew. He loves this stuff. His brother lives in Georgia and when we go there, we have to stop at every BBQ stand to try their Brunswick stew. Some are better than others. Last month when we were visiting my son, my husband was looking through a new cookbook and found this Brunswick stew recipe. That meant that I had to make it.

BBQ Pork Sandwiches

Fall reminds me of comfort food. One of my husbands favorite comfort sandwiches is a BBQ pork sandwich.  Sometimes I think he grew up in the south the way he likes southern food even though he grew up in Wheeling, WV. Maybe it is just something about southern cooking!

A few years ago I was watching the Food network and Paula Deen was making these BBQ pork sandwiches. I made them for my husband - and the rest is history!

Fall Candle Vase from a Wicker Lamp

A few months back, I pulled a wicker lamp out of the neighbors junk pile. The cord had been cut off but the rest of the parts where there. I keep lamp parts so I took it apart. The lamp shade was "toast",  I wanted to recover it so that was fine. The base of the lamp was wicker and in good shape, but I didn't like the color (sort of dirty blond).  Sorry, I don't have a picture of the original lamp. I didn't think I would be using the base.

The other day as I was cleaning and found the wicker base and had an idea. I found some brown spray paint. I got so excited that I forgot to take a before picture. While the paint was drying, I headed to A. C. Moore for a couple of items.

Free Rocking Chairs

Free is great! We all love free of course. This months rubbish day was very successful. As you may know if you follow my blog that each month we are allowed to "throw out" our rubbish for "balk pick up". In most cases it is plant and tree trimmings, but I have picked up some great furniture pieces. This week was no exception.

My neighbor across the street put out these rocking chairs. I went to put out some garbage and wow there they were. I got so excited, I ran over there and my neighbor happened to be out. Can I have those? Of course, they had bought new ones. They needed some repairs.

Burlap covered vases

As I watch others post their fall projects and talk about cooler weather, it is hard to think about fall when the weather is still so warm here in southern Florida. We may cool off to the mid eighties tomorrow. lol!
So this post is about creating the vases for this "fall" centerpiece.

Our passion for cookies!

Cookies - those tasty little treats that we all seem to desire. Just enough to satisfy our "sweet tooth" but not enough to blow our diet, unless we eat too many of them. By definition, a cookie can be any of a variety of hand-held, flour-based sweet cakes, either crisp or soft. While blogging, I have seen many recipes for cookies being posted. For example: I found these two recipes on Create It Thrusday linky party.

Making the bathroom shine! Cleaning Tips!

It is hard to believe that it is September and fall will be here soon. This is especially true here in LA as the temperature has been in the 100's since I arrived. Now that is hot!

My daughter is actually outside LA near Burbank. You may know if you follow me that she just moved here. She was staying at a friends home while the hardwood floors were being refinished. Last Friday(week from Friday) was the first night that she actually stayed in the house when I arrived. Boxes were everywhere but we did have beds. Finding towels the next morning was something else!

Paper Doillies, Burlap and Lace

I am trying to get back in the groove after being in Vermont for 10 days with my grand kids. The doxies want a lot of attention and there are many things to do to get ready for my trip to LA on Friday to see my daughter. Whew!

I was cleaning up my dining room table where I have a tendency to place project or potential project materials. More on this table than I care to show you!
But as I began to organize, these paper lace doilies caught my eye. What could I do with them? Flowers? Ta Da!

Leaping Lizards!

Early afternoon, the dogs and I head outside to get the clothes off the clothesline. It seems that someone else is enjoying the fresh smelling clothes as well. I must say he scared me at first. I was not expecting him or her.

Sensational Sweet and Sour Meatballs

Sensational, that is what family and friends say when I serve these meatballs. I often serve them when I have company or parties, although I did make them last week just for us.

The first year I made them for our Christmas party, they were gone almost immediately. The recipe makes around 80 meatballs so I thought it would be enough with all of the other food. Last year I doubled the recipe and still they were asking for more. I guess I will triple the recipe this year. lol!

Will I ever get this couch slipcover done?

I haven't been blogging much the past two weeks. I have been sewing and sewing, and then some more sewing. Whew!! My daughter just moved to LA.  She went from a small town in Vermont to LA. What a major change! She has this couch with a beige slip cover on it and wanted to get a new one. Well, there are times when you should keep your mouth shut - I think this time was one of those. I volunteered to make one for her couch being the good mother that I am. How hard could it be?

Preserving shabby wooden treasures!

Now I love my shabby looking treasures. Worn and chippy are fabulous. We especially love old and vintage tools. My husband and I both flock to these when out hunting.  Many of the pieces I have are tools that belonged to my grand parents and my Dad. I love them in displays and have them scattered throughout the house. However, I do like to keep them that way.
It may be only in hot and humid climates like here in Florida, but wood can dry out easily and if neglected too long, they will crack. (Especially pieces that I use outdoors.) Now this might be a good thing, but not for vintage tools. At least that's my opinion. Here are two tools that could use some TLC.

Almond Pudding Loaf

Well, it is still raining here in southern Florida, although we have had periods of clearing, so I decided to bake. It seemed like everything I wanted to make, I was missing an ingredient. I had everything for this Almond Pudding Loaf, so that is what I made.

Too Much Rain?

I have been reading posts about places that have had little rain. Katie over at Katherine's Corner posted about the heat and water rationing and the affect on her Hollyhocks. Well, I wish I could send all of those who need rain some of ours. It started raining on Saturday (southern Florida) and basically has not stopped. Needless to say, our yard is flooded and we have an acre under water. This picture is not great since it was raining so hard and it was dark outside.

MY WV Surprise!

My husband went to West Virginia (Wheeling) for his family reunion. It was rather last minute so he decided to drive from Ft. Lauderdale and would pick up his brother in Georgia. Normally, he would have taken his truck, but 5 days before he left, he was rear ended and over $5,000 in damage. Fortunately, he is fine. So they gave him a Honda Accord. Somewhat smaller than he is use to.

After a few days I get a call, would you like some chairs. Well of course. There were also three lamps. I will take anything. lol! I said, bring what you can. Here is what he brought me.

How NOT to Paint Decals

So have you ever found a neat piece of furniture but it has a decal that can't be removed or a metal container that has a decal. You want to paint them, but how NOT to paint the decals. Never fear, it is actually easier than you think. I found this metal watering can at a garage sale for a $1. Nothing very exciting, but knew I could paint it. However, it had this "metal decal" and I didn't want to paint that.

Eclectic Red Barn: How NOT to paint decals
This watering can had some rust but since I was going to paint it, it didn't matter.

Easy Cherry Squares

Do you have some great recipes that you haven't made in a very, very long time? Well, I do. I am not sure if I forget about them or with all of the new recipes showing up, they seem to replace my old favorites. Whatever the reason, I was looking for a recipe and found this Easy Cherry Squares and thought wow, I haven't made this in years. This would be a great dessert to make and send into my husband's office.

4th of July Garland

I am a little late in getting my 4th of July decorations done, actually getting them started is more like it!  We are working on our deck and it is taking longer than we thought. Hopefully we will be done in time for the 4th. I needed to make something that would not take too much time so I decided to make this 4th of July garland.
Eclectic Red Barn: 4th of July Garland

This was so easy to make and I created it in two evenings as I was sitting on the couch with the dogs on my lap. Here are the directions to make this garland.
