Childhood Possessions

Childhood possessions - what lovely memories they generate. I don't have many items that were mine as a child but I cherish the ones that I do have. One item is this doll box, although I no longer have the dolls or any clothing. It has a tray that lifts out.

I placed some items in the top of the box that I have collected over the years - small mirror, gloves that were mine, shoe pin cushion, little iron pitcher, pearls, and a photo of me at 6 months. Notice the lack of hair. Didn't have much until I was 2 and then it came in curly and is still that way.

Life is a cup to be filled, not drained!

It is a lovely afternoon here in Florida. The rain ended earlier this morning and the sun is out. So I thought, why not take a few minutes and go out on the deck and enjoy some tea. Do you find that you like something hot on a "hot" day? I do, what about you?

Supporting Operation Smile

As you may already know I am a retired college professor and between my husband and I we have 6 college graduates and several grandchildren who are nearing college age.  As a parent and professor I was constantly reminded of the huge cost that students incur when buying their text books.  If any of you are parents or even students, I’m sure you can relate.  Well, for a nominal advertising fee I have been asked to endorse a program being offered by CampusBookRentals and I have agreed.  This post was written by me and all opinions are 100% mine.

While they have an excellent web site and there are great advantages to renting from them;
such as
- saving 40-90% off of bookstore prices
- free shipping both ways
- allowing you to highlight in the textbook
- and flexible renting periods,
I want to focus on two items of note.  The first and very important is that they partner with Operation Smile.

Hubby's Birthday Cake

Stephanie posted these money bouquets that she made for birthday gifts. I thought they were so cute. You can read more about her money bouquets at The Enchanted Rose. I put them in my memory for future birthday ideas.

Yesterday was my husband's birthday. We do not get much into gifts these days, but I wanted to do something special - make him a cake.  His favorite is devil's food with chocolate butter cream frosting. Nothing fancy! But what to put on top?

Guest Post: Going Retro

Today, I am delighted to have Eva Stephen from Home Interior Design as a guest host writer.  She is a writer, blogger, DIYer, design enthusiast, choosy about colors, nature admirer, social media addict, chocolate fan, and mango lover. I hope you enjoy her post!

Going Retro!
In home décor retro is the new 'now.' Even if your home has all the mod cons, latest gadgetry and shiny new furniture you can add a touch of vintage warmth to any room. You have great freedom of choice in your particular decade of retro, with everything from the 1920s to the 1980s making a comeback in interior design and on the catwalk alike. You can choose to remodel the entire room, or just add touches of retro glamour here and there to hint at homage to days gone by.

My Framed "B" with Handmade Decorative Trim

As you might know if you have followed my blog,  I have been working on turning my red barn into my workshop. You can read more about the red barn project here. The problem is that there is way too much stuff in the barn that needs to be fixed, painted, distressed, re-purposed or something else. So as I plug away at the items, I recently found a vintage frame that I purchased when my sister and I went on the Longest Yard Sale a few years ago. It was awesome!

Here is my finished "B" frame,  but it did not look like this when I purchased it.

As I look around blogland(is that a word?) I see so many wonderful and crafty projects that convert old or discarded materials into something useful and often beautiful. I recently ran across some projects that fall into this category and I would like to share them with you. Some of them you may have upcycled yourself and others might provide new ideas. Enjoy!

This first set is for the birds. Won't they like this for a house?

Lovely Magnolias

Spring rain not only brings beautiful flowers, but livens up the trees here in southern Florida. The fruit trees have blooms and baby fruits while the flowering trees are budding profusely. One of my favorite trees right now is the magnolias. The white blooms against the dark waxy green leaves is so beautiful.  I was sitting out on the deck and could smell the flowers.  I had to pick some.

Vintage Picture Framed

I love all types of picture frames. There are so many things you can do with them, including using them to frame a picture. I purchased 5 of these vintage prints. I love their subject matter and the vintage characters. Her dress is fabulous and the hair. Oh!

I had this frame but it was not large enough to fit any of these pictures. So I decided to make a copy of one of them and reduce it to fit. (Actually I had my husband do it at work, great color copier)

New Life for A Broken Rocking Chair

I was featured!
When I found this rocking chair last year at my in-laws flea market, it was in such bad shape that they were just going to throw it out. Thinking someone might want it, they priced it at $2. Needless to say, or great for me, it didn't sell.

House Plants turned Garden Plants

When I lived up north, I loved to have house plants. One of the plants that I had was the peace lily. When I moved to Florida, I brought a few of my plants with me and the peace lily was one of them. I realized that instead of having this plant in the house, people here planted them in their gardens.

Tea and Cherry "Light" Scones

Nothing like enjoying a cup of tea or coffee and a warm cherry scone. Yum!

I love scones, but I hate all of the calories. So I decided to find a way to make them with a lot less calories than my original version. This version can be adapted to add what ever fruit you like best.

Got Seed?

Birds like to eat so why not make their feeders fun and whimsical. I am always looking for new ways to create bird feeders for my garden. I have been working on my side garden lately since it is right out side my window where I have my computer. You already saw my fountain in My Little Squirrel post, today I will show you my new bird feeders.

This one is just a little whimsical. Wonder if the birds think so?

What to do with those single silver salt shakers?

Have you ever come across beautiful silver salt and pepper shakers but there was only one of them. Sometimes you even find a pair. I love to collect silver salt and pepper shakers although I don't really use them that way. I love to display them and use them as vases.

Window People?

We have all seen how great old windows are - many linky parties feature projects and decorating ideas what use old windows  - table tops, home decor, garden ideas and the list goes on and on. But did you ever think about using old windows to create a person? Well, that's exactly what this couple did up the road from me.

Orange Ricotta Yummies

Sometimes you just have to adapt your recipe. I have made these cookies from Giada De Laurentiis several times and love them. The recipe calls for lemons but when I went to make it I only had oranges. So why not!

They are a very moist cookie and they freeze well. That is if you have any left to freeze!

Tabebuia or Trumpet Tree

What a lovely tree this is. Its full name is Tabebuia caraiba and grows from central Florida southward. In the spring it produces clusters of yellow trumpet flowers.

My Bouillon Fringe Foot Stool

PJH Desisgns
It is my husband's annual golf outing with his brother, cousin and dad. Each year they come to Florida to golf. This year they decided to come to our house in Eustis. They golf and I cook. Well, it is not that bad since I like to cook and I get to garage sale while they are out. I came across this little stool at a garage sale.  She was asking $5 but I got it for $2.50.

My Little Squirrel

My desk is a great place to work, because it is beside two large windows that looks out on my side garden. I am still working on getting this garden populated with plants and yard art. The other day this squirrel came over to the fountain for water. He climbed up and drank not only from the tray on the fountain.

Bolognaise Pizza Bread

I first saw this recipe when Rachael Ray made it several years ago.  She makes her tomato sauce by adding fresh tomatoes, but I cut some corners and it still turned out great.  With a side salad this makes a great meal.

Eclectic Red Barn: Bolognaise Pizza Bread with side salad

It is like deep dish pizza but has more filling.  My family loves this and requests it often.

Island Mango Bread

My Turn for us
If you have followed my blog, you know that I have several mango trees in my yard. Last year was a bumper crop. I had more mangoes than I knew what to do with. I made everything with mangoes.  Finally, we decided after giving many away to freeze the rest. We cut them into chucks and froze them - all 40 quart bags of them. Yes, I had mangoes!

Well, I try to use them as much as possible from the freezer, but it seems like they are multiplying in there. Guess what - my trees are loaded again. So I have been trying new and familiar recipes. I found this one and made changes. I sent it to work with my husband for all of his employees. I have to do something here !! They loved it so I am sharing it with you.

Have you tried Bar Keepers Friend?

Have you ever seen a piece of silver or brass and thought, I like it but it is in bad shape. Well, all of the pieces that you see below were those kind of pieces(one is missing from this picture) - some more than others. I got all of them for $2 so I said, what the heck!

I brought the pieces home and grabbed the Bar Keepers Friend.
