Saving a Cast Off

Saving a Cast Off

I have been know to suddenly stop the car while driving and this time was no exception. I saw this side table beside the road and I knew I had to save it from the dump.  Don't you just hate it when you see things setting out for garbage? I have recused so many pieces that way. I wish I could bring home more, but hubby would not appreciate that. I haven't brought home a piece in a long time, so I was do.

Let's look at how it began. The table was quite sturdy and in good shape except for the top.

The entire piece was black, although most of the top was very marred. (I got so excited to work on it, I forgot to take a picture) As I begin to sand the top, the paint just chipped off. I kept sanding but realized I needed to strip the top in order to get the paint out from the corners and the grooves around the top.

After the top was stripped, I sanded it and then used Dark Walnut stain on the top. Then I applied two coats of varnish. (I sanded in between coats.) The top turned out beautifully. I was glad that I did not paint it black since the wood was so nice.

I taped the top off and gave the bottom part a new coat of black flat paint. (That's what I had.) I was so pleased at how nice the piece turned out.

It has a lot of detail on the sides and the bottom.  I was really surprised that nothing was broken. It is such a cute little table and I am so glad I was able to save it.
