Metal Sun - Trash to Treasure

It was garbage day and my neighbor said, "Hey, are interested in this metal sun I am throwing out"? Of course was my answer. My husband just looked at me and said, you can't talk to her any more! He was only joking, I think!

I loved it. The bottom part had some bent metal, but I thought I could fix it. You can see the arrow at the bottom where it is bent under, causing it not to lie flat.

I tried to pull on it with pliers and when that didn't work, I grabbed my trusty wooden hammer and "smashed it".

That did the job. Now to paint it. Although I loved the way it looked with its rusty spots, I knew that the weather here would destroy it soon, especially since it was already rusting. I grabbed some spray paint. I had gold, green and some brown.

She was not sure where the green had come from but I decided to continue with it. First I sprayed the gold on the face and waited for that to dry. Next I sprayed the green area and didn't care if it got on some of the gold. Then sprayed the brown on the curled ends. You can see when I pounded out the bottom that it now lays against the wall. A little crinkly but who cares.

It is now shinier than before, but I know it will weather here in Florida. I also sprayed a clear lacquer on it to help protect it some.

I hung it on my barn. Seemed like the perfect place. It is a little askew because it is heavy and that was where the stud was. What can you do?

Her trash became my treasure! Now that is a good thing!

  1. Just love it! You gave this old piece a new life. Turning 60 on my upcoming birthday, I love stories where old things are given or find new purpose. Beautiful.

    1. Leslie,
I turned 70 last year and I am still trying to find new purposes. lol!!
We throw out too many things just because they are old or slightly damaged (I fit all of that) when they can be given new life.
      You are still a "baby".
