Tea for the Birds?

Who says the birds don't like their feed in fancy cups? Well maybe they don't, but I like to hang something fancy for them to eat from. I love to pick up cheap cups and saucers and when I found this one, I decided to make a bird feeder out of it.

Wait, that is not a bird feeder, where is the seed?
You are so right, no bird feeder, but a great display, so what happened. Well, I did make it into a feeder, but this one became a hanging indoor flower holder. Huh!
Let me start from the beginning. Here is the cup and saucer I bought. I don't have the original picture of it. Now this looks more like a feeder.
Here is what you will need to make this cup and saucer feeder:
- cup and saucer (ones with a flatter saucer works best)
- a spoon
- chain and chain hooks

1.  I drilled  three holes in the saucer using a ceramic/glass drill bit.You can get them at most hardware stores and Lowe's or Home Depot. I used a drill press but you can use a drill for this. Just be careful when drilling, sometimes they crack. Go slow. I used the chain as a guide for the size of the hole.

2.  I cut the chain in equal lengths. You can decide how long you want your cup and saucer to hang. Mine were 16 inches long. You can buy this in kits or have it cut to length. I actually had some left from a ceiling fan.  See the chain hooks (not sure what they are called)

3. I put the chain through the holes and attached the chain hook. As you can see, I cut the chain hook in half. They go farther that way. (This was a gold chain I had that I used on the second one)

4. I brought the lengths together and looped them over a ring.
5. I used three other chain hooks to secure these on the ring.

6.  Now it was time to put it all together. I glued the cup to the saucer and then glued the spoon to the saucer. It is ready to hand.

It turned out so cute that I didn't want to give it to the birds, so I added these lovely silk flowers and ribbon and hung it in the kitchen window.

So this is the one I made for the birds. Haven't put it all together yet. I hope they like blue.

So if you find some cups and saucers, you might want to make your own bird feeder or keep it indoors for yourself.

  4. Hi Beverly, very clever idea! I have several unmatched teacups and saucers that I think I'm going to make bird feeders out of. Thanks for the inspiration! Although I'm concerned about breaking the saucers to drill a hole for the chain - any words of advice?
